That's certainly what the MVPDs want us to believe, anyway, while they continue 
to rake in their infinite revenue streams.
 
I've no doubt that every solution will entail its own set of "unintended 
consequences," like you describe. But even that is manageable.
 
The Internet, so far anyway, has managed to stick to this open standards model. 
The MVPDs could certainly do likewise. If they did, then the TV and STB 
manufacturers would make their products upgradeable, or standard STBs would be 
offered ubiquitously as transitional upgrade devices, just as they do 
everywhere else in the world.
