Sanyo Elec joins HD DVD camp in format battle

TOKYO, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Japan's Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd.
(TOKYO:6764) said on Tuesday it would support HD DVD technology as a
next generation DVD format, giving a shot in the arm to existing
proponents Toshiba Corp. (TOKYO:6502) and NEC Corp. (TOKYO:6701).
HD DVD competes with another DVD format called Blu-ray,
supported by a consortium whose members include Sony Corp.
(TOKYO:6758) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (TOKYO:6752) --
two consumer electronics giants that fought head on in the
videocassette format battle in the 1980s.

Winning Sanyo's support is a significant step forward for the
HD DVD camp due to the Osaka-based company's technological
expertise in optical pickups, which are used to read and write
data on optical discs.

It holds about 40 percent share in unit terms in the global
optical pickup market.

Sanyo, Japan's third-largest consumer electronics maker,
plans to start offering DVD players based on the HD DVD format in
the domestic market late next year, followed by a launch in the
United States, a company spokesman said.
