Stern: Sirius Subscribers Top 700,000

Sirius Satellite Radio (nasdaq: SIRI - news - people ) said its
subscription list has exceeded 700,000 members and is on pace to
reach 1 million by the end of the year. Over 69,000 new subscribers
were added in September. With the signing of radio personality Howard
Stern in early October, Sirius aims to overtake XM Satellite Radio
Holdings (nasdaq: XMSR - news - people ), which has more than
2.5 million subscribers, as the leader in satellite radio. Stern's
five-year deal, which will pay him $500 million, begins in 2006 after
his contract expires with Viacom's (nyse: VIAb - news - people
) Infinity Broadcasting. The 50-year-old talk show host will move
from free over-the-air broadcasts to regulation-free satellite
service, and Sirius hopes his listeners will too--all 10 million of
them. Shares of Sirius were at $3.85, up 3 cents in morning trading.
