Plasma TV makers back change in HDTV resolution measurements

The Advanced PDP Development Center Corporation (APDC), established by Hitachi, Panasonic, and Pioneer, to promote the development of advanced engineering and manufacturing technologies for Plasma displays, has announced that it has developed a new method of measuring TV resolution.

The Moving Picture Resolution Measurement System is based upon a method announced last year and makes it possible to precisely measure moving picture resolution.

The group says that many TVs claiming 1080p resolution base that simply upon the number of visible pixels displayed in a still image, which is not the same as the HDTV's moving picture resolution.

The new system to measure moving picture resolution includes a digital camera, signal generator, a controller PC and image data processing software. In the process:

1. a specified test image is scrolled on the display to simulate a moving picture, 2. the movement of the camera is adjusted to the movement of the image so that it can be captured, and 3. the image is then captured by the digital camera, analysed and expressed mathematically to indicate the precise moving picture resolution.

Since the APDC measurement method simulates the way the human eye works, reconstructing the image reflected on the retina, the result of the quantitative analysis is very close to the way people see images

The system is applicable to any display, be it plasma, LCD, SED, CRT, or any other you care to think of. I wonder if plasma TVs will generally fare better under this set of measurements, in general, than other technologies?

So there you go. Expect to see the new system developed and brought to market as a new way to measure TVs and confuse consumers even more.
