TWICE : ARLINGTON, VA.-- More than one-third of=20
television owners, 37 percent, without=20
high-definition TV (HDTV) said they will buy an=20
HDTV set within the next two years, according to=20
results from a Consumer Electronics Association=20
(CEA) study.

This trend has significant implications for the=20
home theater furniture industry, according to CEA.

CEA's report, called "New Tech TVs and=20
=46urniture," showed 56 percent of TV owners=20
without high-tech sets would buy a TV stand,=20
cabinet or entertainment center. The study also=20
showed 36 percent would buy at the same time as=20
purchasing a high-tech TV, and 20 percent would=20
buy after purchasing a new high-tech TV.

"The emergence of new television technologies=20
has created both a challenge and an opportunity=20
for accessory vendors," said Paul Sabbah,=20
VP/business development, Techcraft Manufacturing,=20
and chairman of CEA's Accessories division home=20
theater working group.

"These survey results show the strong influence=20
that the widespread adoption of new digital TV=20
technologies is having on other segments of the=20
industry, such as the home theatre furniture=20
category," said Sean Wargo, industry analysis=20
director of CEA.

Other key findings from the survey include=20
feedback on where consumers plan to place the=20
television, with 36 percent of TV owners without=20
high-tech sets placing the set in a cabinet or=20
entertainment center if they bought a new=20
technology TV. Another 34 percent would mount the=20
television on a wall or ceiling and 13 percent=20
would place it on a TV stand.

Nearly 73 percent of all TV owners preferred=20
television furniture that matches the room's=20
decor, while 18 percent said they would chose=20
furniture that matched the television. Nearly 48=20
percent of TV owners expressed interest in=20
customizable furniture for consumer electronics=20
products.

In addition, 68 percent of TV owners without=20
high-tech sets said they would buy a flat-panel=20
display if they were to purchase a new tech TV.=20
Some 19 percent said they would buy an LCD screen=20
TV, and 11 percent said they would purchase a=20
rear-projection big-screen TV.
