Without AFD, an MPEG encoder doesn't care. Video is video, regardless of the aspect ratio. We will be feeding PBS the New Year's Eve "Live from Lincoln Center" show in 16:9 through the same encoder, with the same settings, that we use for 4:3. Of course, absent AFD, we need to orally tell PBS what do do with the images.

AFD or no AFD, I'd like to see the MPEG encoder that can smoothly and seamlessly switch between 16:9 and 4:3 formats on the fly.

And if a broadcaster decides to use AFD to intermix 16:9 and 4:3 material, what does a non-AFD box deliver?
