A key enabling component of any OTT (VMVPD) service is access to the content
offered by MVPD services. There is a good reason that we have seen OTT
initiatives from existing MVPD services like Dish and DirecTV, which already
have contracts to deliver content to every TV market.
Clearly Verizon is moving into the content business. The larger question in all
of this is whether companies like Cox and Comcast can launch VMVPD services
with a national footprint?
My guess is that the local "monopoly walls" may well be coming down. But the
article also talks about bundling of Phone, TV and Broadband; this requires a
local service footprint. For example, can Comcast compete effectively in a
market where they do not offer phone and broadband? It leaves them in the same
position as the DBS services, which must rely on another companies local
infrastructure...
Clearly the shift to IP is significant. This largely eliminates the problems
with legacy infrastructures for MVPD services, which are still locked into
MPEG-2 and MPEG-TS. The DBS services have added h.264 capabilities to their
newer STBs, but the cable guys are sitting on millions of MPEG-2 boxes. With IP
you can negotiate with the customers device and provide a compatible stream as
OTT services do today.
