Why is this misleading Bert?
So, I am belaboring here again, Craig. "OTT" refers to TV content web sites
that are available to all, irrespective of ISP. That does not describe what
Verizon is testing out. The article describes an IPTV service, just as walled
up as their current MPEG-2 TS broadcast service. A walled garden MVPD, which
happens to use IP, much like Uverse, but over fiber instead of ADSL.
OTT refers to many walled garden services; the main difference is that the
geography where these services are available is no longer constrained by lo al
infrastructure. That being said, the OTT services still deal with the reality
that most U.S. Homes still subscribe to a legacy MVPD service; Verizon is
simply testing a new approach that will harmonize the content from the MVPD
service with content delivered via the Internet.
It would have been more amazing if Verizon were considering morphing into an
OTT service, for content they have the rights to today.
And Bert misses the point once again. Verizon does not have the contractual
rights to create a national MVPD service using OTT technology They have local
franchises with geographically limited contracts, and national franchises for
some content that can only be delivered via their cellular networks.
Regards
Craig
