My understanding is that it was this feature of the DTx work that led to this new undertaking. The point was that IF you make the trellis start a known "determined" state (clock based), "syncing" could be easily accomplished based upon a known state. It builds up from there...the DF dependent upon "slicing", embedding new features/user data types, and a whole lot more...an overhauled "physical framework" to work with.
