By airing ads. I thought you knew this stuff. TV is ad supported. If you choose
to watch TV via a monopolistic pipe that charges you a fee, too bad, so sad,
you get to pay more.

rich using content he doesn't own, this problem will occur.
Absolutely identical. But this is not a valid justification for
retransmission consent. Local (not DBS) MVPDs are required to
carry local broadcasts.
I will grant you this much: any station demanding retrans consent, instead of
must carry, should be taken off the basic tier. It should be added to whatever
"bundle" makes sense, like the extended basic bundle. But with this, I doubt
you'll see any big change in people's behavior. People still want their local
stations on the cable, as proven by the high drama when a broadcaster blocks
its signal.

Not at all. If cable were free, there would be no problem. Since cable charges
a fee, and so many subscribers go bonkers when the broadcaster's signal is
blocked, that fee must depend significantly on the broadcasters' content.
Hence, they DESERVE their pound of flesh. Else, people would never complain
when the signal is blocked.
You, Craig, need to come to grips with what it means to tie yourself to a local
monopoly that charges monthly fees. For four decades, you haven't been able to
figure it out. And you know the worst port of it? You are trying your best to
duplicate this problem on the Internet. Unbelievable.
