Let's see whether the much repeated "85 percent" number is close to accurate.

This article:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_households

claims that there were 117,538,000 households in the US, in 2009. Another
article,

http://www.numberof.net/number-of-us-households/

claimed that there were 116,783,000 in 2008.

Okay, so the number is going up, and let's assume that 117,538,000 still holds
true today, although that's unlikely.

This is dated May 2015:

http://ftp.media.radcity.net/ZSND/issues/May2015/S7800.pdf

In spite of a confusing combination of numbers, pluses and minuses, it does
finally say:

"In all for Q1 2015 cable/satellite/telco providers gained 7,716 subscribers,
taking pay TV in the U.S. to 95,208,333 subs. By LRG's [Leichtman Research
Group, Inc.] tally, over the past year, pay TV providers lost about 370,000
subscribers-compared to a loss of about 65,000 subscribers over the prior year."

(So which is it? Up 7,716, or down 370,000?)

Well, never mind. The main point is,

95,208,333 / 117,538,000 = 81.00 percent. How much do you wanna bet that by now
we are already below 80 percent? I'm assuming that "pay-TV" here means paying
the old-fashioned way, not Netflix and the like. I think we may already be at
or below 80 percent, Craig. A good reason for the changing attitudes among
content CEOs.
