Not very surprising though, right? If they mean strictly POTS landline users,
cell phones and smartphones do a lot more than the old POTS phones do, so it
hardly makes sense to compare them. And we all know that millennials use
texting a lot more than voice calls. POTS phones don't text, they don't browse
the web, and they can't get on social media, or send e-mails.
But if by "landlines" they mean "cabled service to homes," to include DSL, HFC,
or FiOS, I flat don't believe them. If you want home broadband, e.g. WiFi, you
still need this service. All those millennials using the smartphones indoors
are most likely also using the "landline," depending how you define the term.
It will be interesting when the 5G fixed service is made available. That will
blur the lines. That service will not be cabled at all, but it can certainly
carry "POTS," i.e. the plain telephone service, just as FiOS can. FiOS simply
re-creates the POTS signal, on your premises. Even keeping the same phone
number as before.
So this seems a bit like those articles that talk about how much TV has
changed, and then they show a 1950s era set. TV hasn't resembled the way that
1950 era set was used, for decades. It's hardly new news.
