All the major chains stocked Beta, but that alone couldn't save the format. Laserdisc players were destined to be a niche product, the format was dying, and DVD finished it off.

I think that if the larger rental chains had stocked Laserdisk back in the late 1970s, that format might have had a much healthier existence. Bert
