Two articles on this topic in today's EE Times. http://www.eetimes.com/ Verizon and AT&T got the bulk of this spectrum. These articles are a first glimpse of what they plan. AT&T is talking a combination of their B block with the open platform C block won by Aloha Partners. So they are talkling about this new open source Android platform for new cell phones. However, they are talking about a 3G scheme. AT&T is now GSM with GPRS and EDGE. Verizon instead is going to 4G, i.e. a broadband IP-based network, and they are not constrained to an open platform. Most interesting is that both of them are looking at Long Term Evolution (LTE) as their lower protocol layers. Which means, Verizon is walling away from CDMA and wideband CDMA. What a blow to Qualcomm! This LTE scheme uses OFDMA for the downlink and single carrier upstream. How very weird. Now I wonder what will happen to GM's OnStar in a couple of years (which now depends on the Verizon CDMA network).
