- This week's ads generally represent two weeks' worth. For Best Buy
and Circuit City, it's three weeks. For the stores in the New York free
tabloids (am New York, New York Press, Village Voice, and West Side Spirit),
it's less than one week.
- This week I've listed 226 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of those,
151 (67%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 100% of
those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. were supposed to have integrated
DTT-reception capability. I've also listed 121 ads for TVs between 25- and
35-inch. Of those, 13 (11%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of
July 1, 50% of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. were supposed to
have integrated DTT-reception capability.

DTT stations in the FCC CDBS database as of August 28:

Association for Marketing Conference. According to Forrester Research, there
were 10 million households with HD sets at the end of 2004, and, of those, 1.9

- I was in the UK last week. In London, I stayed with friends who have a
tiny analog TV they rarely watch. One of them said he heard the transition
would be delayed due to the 2012 Olympics. In Scotland, I stayed with
relatives who used to watch a small analog TV rarely but got a widescreen DTV
as a present and now watch it a lot. Reception is via an old roof antenna. I
saw no problems but was told there are rare blocks and freezes on ITV. In the
south of England, I stayed with friends who have no TV but were aware of the
transition. For what it's worth, they love their digital radio.

- According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan plans to relax restrictions on
recording digital TV:

- Based on figures from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), sales to
U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets for the first 31 weeks of 2005 were
down 10.6% from the same period in 2004; my ten-week running average was down
20.9%. For the first 32 weeks, they were down 11.1%, and my ten-week running
average was down 21.8%.
Sales of so-called "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers for the 31st week
were 56,619 units, for the 32nd week 66,289, and for the first 32 weeks
2,346,904 (compared to 11,701,736 for sets not called "digital" by CEA). For
the 31st week, the number of so-called "Digital Televisions" sold for the week
was more than the number sold for the same week last year, but, for the 32nd
week, it was again lower. That negative-growth continues into figures I'm not
permitted to release yet.
"Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without
DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 16.7% of the TVs (not counting
plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers through the 31st and 32nd weeks
this year. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 83% of the
non-plasma, non-direct-view-LCD TVs sold through the 32nd week this year were
still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. The last time CEA
released numbers allowing the LCD and plasma TVs to be included, they raised
the "digital" percentage to about 25%; I suspect it is higher now.
To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers.
- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of the only the DirecTV units at
Best Buy and Video & Audio Center and the Sony PVRs in Sony's ad.
- Ad confusions: Fry's said last week the mystery brand 32-inch LCD TV had
integrated DTT reception, but signs in their stores corrected that; it was also
corrected in this week's ad. Sony said its HDTVs include DTT reception, but
the ad listed two models that apparently don't.

Hitachi's new 51M200 and 65M200 models at Circuit City get around the
mandate by eliminating their NTSC tuners. The premium on integrated DTT
reception for the Mitsubishi WD-52327 over the WD-52527 was about $500 at both
Ken Crane's and Video & Audio Centers.
