Sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks for another great idea!

Oh I like that! The piles were OK too. But, I'll try accordions. Thanks!

Ashley,

I've been using something like this with my classes for the last couple of
weeks. If your kids are up for drawing little, you can also do the whole thing
by folding a paper accordion-style and having them "hide" the previous picture
before passing on the sentence or viceversa -- it makes the paper management
easier for the paper-challenged among us (I still have giant piles of pictures
and sentences from the first ill-fated attempt at this a couple weeks back).

Hi fellow OLAers,
Today I did the following activity and it was a fun exercise and a way to
incorporate writing. A big part of it is just getting them to follow the
directions. I'll explain the acticity and then I can give you some ideas below
of how to scafold their understanding. To keep attention, I often added
movement in between each step so that students were sticking with me. (Manos
arriba, Toquen la nariz etc...)

Before:
Prepare small piles of papers. Each pile should have 7 pieces of paper. (These
do not have to be very big). I paperclipped each pile to help, but that's not
necessary. (You could also have a helpful student do this for you at some
point).

Students sat in a circle on the floor. They each had a pencil and a small white
board to use as a "desk". You could have them use their cuadernos. My students
stayed in the same spot the whole time. But you could totally have them crab
walk to a new spot at any moment during this writing activity.

During:
Students will each get a packet of 7 pieces of paper.
They should number them 1-7
Page 1 should be on top
They should create an original sentence (using vocab) and write it on page 1.
Time a minute
Have everyone pass their piles of paper (all 7 pages) to the right.
Page 1 should still be on top.

The student should read the sentence.
Then place page one at the back of the pile.
Page 2 should be on top.
They should draw a picture on page 2 representing page 1's sentence.
Time 2 minutes
Have students pass their piles to the right again.
Page 2 should be on top still.

Student should look at the picture and then put page 2 at the back of the pile
Page 3 should now be on top.
They should write a sentence (to represent the picture on page 2) on page 3.
Time a minute.
Pass the packet (with page 3 on top) to the right (or two spaces to the right
if you want).

Repeat until page 4 has a picture, page 5 a sentence, page 6 a picture, and
page 7 a final sentence.

After: Staple the little packet together and have them share their "stories" in
small groups. (The groups could also share by acting out the pictures to the
whole class).

Things I did to help them understand:
I drew representations of their pages on the board and either drew a line and a
period when I wanted them to write a sentence or a stick fugure of some sort
when I wanted a picture.

I also made it clear which number page should be on top and which should be in
the back. I also reminded them not to peek at the earlier pages. I said it's a
secret or a surprise.

This takes a while. But, some of the stories can be great. I think I could now
do it again and students won't have to worry about the directions as much as
coming up with awesome sentences and drawings.

I hope you all are well. Please send me any clarifying questions or comments. I
don't know how well I explained this writing activity.

Abrazos!
Ashley
