I did this, though I’ll warn you that the class gets super chill. It’s an interesting way both to start class and to end it. I taught students how to breathe & where to focus, so before we even began, we did a few physical exercises - reaching up, breathing in, reaching the floor breathing out. We practiced different ways of breathing and being quiet - inhaling through one nostril, exhaling through another, focusing on the breath. For some students, counting if that’s what helped them (one good focusing technique is to count from 1-10 without distractions - if a new thought enters, they have to start over again). Words that came up - inhalar, exhalar, nariz, arriba, abajo, agachar, tocar, respiración, relajarse, …. this is from memory. You can also talk about their reactions afterward - what did they think about while they were sitting there? Did they notice a special silence that took place, or was everyone screwing around? Above all, I think demonstrating the patience you are hoping to engender with your own affect. Hope this helps :-) Nanosh > On Mar 2, 2015, at 9:38 PM, Warren Billings > <wbillings@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > > I would like to do a minute of silence/mindfulness with one of my classes. > > How do you do it? > > I'm thinking of just saying a minute of silence in L2 and staying with them > in the circle, not even look at a clock or phone, just guess the timing. > Modeling what you're supposed to do. > > I want them to have mindful thoughts during this time.
