This is such a great convo to follow! Looks like exciting things are
happening in the district. Some great solutions and ideas are being
offered. I would also say that if it is proficiency-based, students get the
credit once they meet the proficiency standard for that year.
To clarify the Goals, we have always had 5 and the 6th was implied, we just
added it on as a 'formal' 6th goal, so both of you are looking at the
correct OWL goals!
As far as workshops, there are several possible workshops in the
summer/fall (MD, ME, MN). There is a two-day OWL1: Foundations & Application
<http://www.owlanguage.com/wsr/?ee=85> in GA in June! Bootcamp is a bit
steep due to the fact that its a week-long training. It includes a one-day
ACTFL OPI training, all the materials and lunches every day. It is an
incomparable week that connects you to other amazing educators and gets you
ready for the beginning of school. If it is too steep, keep your eye on the

tentative workshops will be finalized over the next month or so. Don't

Congrats on your program reorganization!
I would share that the SB member seems to be biased towards Spanish when
truthfully all languages are equally important regarding college and career
readiness.
Depending on how flexible your scheduling admin. is you may be able to
award level I credit at a time other than at the end of freshman year. For
example, once a student has demonstrated mastery of the competencies he is
awarded credit. They may be able to get on board if you explain that once
they have one academic year of the language they should meet the level I
expectation.
Another option could be to have a language exhibition day/night where
the students can try each language in the classroom and pick them there.

Oh, and news from our district. My colleague, Linda Haggarty, will be
taking on ALL of the French and Spanish courses
here at Woodsville High School next year, so that I can teach the Latin
classes here and teach Spanish or an introduction
to World Languages course at the middle school. Next Monday's School
Board meeting will be interesting when this topic
comes up on the agenda, because at least one SB member wants Spanish
7-8 to equal Spanish 1 at the high school, and
the middle school administration prefers to do an intro to each of the
three languages: French, Latin, and Spanish in order
for the students to have some inkling of what they would be
encountering here in each language. We'll see whose vision
prevails. Of course, the SB member doesn't realize that what she is
asking for just doesn't fit into the schedule at the
middle school...a fix that would require an entire overhaul of the
current schedule.
Let me know precisely what you are looking for and I would be happy to
add my 2 cents worth.

For example star charts, etc. I teach courtesy phrases by prompting
them to say thank you or you're welcome, please, excuse me, etc.
