Our speaker on Monday, August 1, is Bill Tweit, Olympia, Washington,
presenting:
“Westport Seabirds, five decades of observing seabirds and marine mammals
off Washington”
The presentation describes the basic elements of the California Current
ecosystem off the coast of Washington, provides an introduction to Westport
Seabirds and some of the birds that are typically observed in different
offshore habitats, illustrates some of the changes in bird life and marine
mammals that we have observed over a half century of pelagic trips, and
closes with some tips for a successful pelagic off our coast.
Bill started birding as a kid in the Chicago area in the late 1960s; his
first pelagic trip was on the Bluenose Ferry in the Bay of Fundy in 1971,
and two years later he took his first pelagic trip out of Westport when he
moved to Washington. He became a leader for Westport Seabirds a few years
later, and still enjoys taking birders from around the globe offshore into
the productive waters of the California Current. In 2005, along with
Terry Wahl and Steve Mlodinow, he published Birds of Washington: Status and
Distribution, the first book on Washington birds since 1955. He served as
a regional editor for North American Birds for a couple of decades, and now
is an eBird reviewer for Washington and is also a member of the Washington
Bird Records Committee. He and his wife live in Olympia, WA , conveniently
situated between the mountains and the ocean.
