That's why I generally, after focusing on first item to be included in selection, generally would prefer to then hold in control key while arrowing around, and then while still holding in control key, hitting space bar will toggle selection of current item, etc.

Have to held down your shift key while arrowing up or down depending on which folder you are at. Now keep in mind if you select for example fold b you can select fold c but not be because if you go back to it you will unselect the previously selected items.
