My tattoo's are just there for various reasons, but, mostly the designs at least sort of signify something to me, or else, like my braille tattoo's they're also sort of a statement, and I suppose also a way of making sure people don't misunderstand me, or make assumptions - even if go to something like an I.T. meeting at a corporate venue, it's unlikely they'll mistake me for a corporate dummy/slave...<smile>

And, sort of changing subject/topic, that's also partly since even if dress up nice, bit hard to hide long hair, eye-brow rings, and tattoo's inside inner forearms all the time.

But, yes, aside from silly people who wake up after a long weekend, with tattoo's on that they don't remember getting - that's been used as a joke in multiple movie plots - I think of tattoo's as a form of long term investment - decent quality, decent ink, good workmanship, and choosing a design that will make sense/still appeal to you in the long run are the most important aspects of getting a tattoo, and you don't really need to even try, let alone be able to explain a design to someone else - as long as it truly means something to you - most of the time anyway.

And, yes, some tattoo's are closer to forms of landmarks, to help remind you of a specific occasion/occurrence, etc. etc., but, again, every person will have their own reasons/form of reasoning.

Stay well

Thanks for sharing, friends can be as precious as family, more so sometimes,
depending on the family.

I know my Dad had a few gems, but at 87, they're a bit wrinkled and vague
now. On one arm is my mother, on the other his favourite horse. No
comments please! Other things too, though hardly discernable now. We
wouldn't be allowed to lift and tan them even if they were.

I never bothered myself.

Rh.

Not necessarily relevant to much, and might not completely make sense to
everyone, but, my tattoo artist died this week.

Not sure of details as of yet, but, he was also into biking, etc., and he
(obviously) also lived here in South Africa, so unless it was just some or
other sort of natural disease/cause, it's also quite possible it was to do
with an accident, etc., but anyway.

Anyway, he was an old buddy, who I'd known for roundabout 20 years, and
aside from all my tattoo's having been done by him, that includes the
apparently world first, actual braille tattoo's that he figured out how to
do, of his own accord before I'd even gotten around to asking him about a
thought that had been simmering in the back of my own mind.

Also, his sort of starting point as a tattoo artist was him practicing on
his buddies in another buddy's flat, back in the early 90's, and even then
he was doing damn near perfect work - I still get comments about the
detailed shading on the bit of barbed wire around my one arm, which is also
sort of the only tattoo I have where the design has no really meaningful
reason as far as I'm concerned, but, it was something he wanted to test/try out back in the day, and I liked the look of his designs back then already.

Anyway, like my one other bud has already said, we'll see each other on the
flip side, and if I ever want to get any more art work done, it's going to
be a bit hard to find someone who can compare to this friend of mine that
near the end had like a 6 month waiting period if he didn't know/like you
personally...<smile>

Stay well, Ant!
