The east wind was really howling for several hours yesterday morning at Tierra
del Mar (Tillamook Co.). When it subsided late morning, I did a seawatch from
my deck. Not much was going on, but then I spied a small, rufous-orange bird
floating on the water. It repeatedly took flight, each time heading a short
distance towards the beach. Naturally, I tried to make it into some
interesting seabird, but nothing fit. Eventually, it came close enough for me
to see it was a VARIED THRUSH. By this time it was exhausted and/or
waterlogged, and made no further attempts to come ashore. When last seen it
was floating on its side at the edge of the surf. I doubt it survived.
