The Hobby is highly migratory, feeding on airborne songbirds and insects. Their northward movement in Europe spikes about now. One was well photographed near Steinkjer, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway last year about this time. That's the dizzying latitude of 64 degrees north. I imagine the bird in Homer was spending the winter on southern Honshu (the "big" island in Japan) or someplace south of there. Hobbies breed regularly north of the Sea of Okhotsk.
