I apologize to Nick Lethaby if I mis-state any of the comments that he recently
made to me on the subject. Through the years I have noted how perspicacious he
often is regarding birding matters.
We were recently discussing the spate of eastern Asian species to the Northwest
(Redwing, Fieldfare, Red-flanked Bluetail, Siberian Accentor, Pintail Snipe,
Little Bunting, others???). I suggested the obvious, that the breeding range
of these species may be expanding northward, and therefore giving some species
an easier angle to reach us. Nick suggested too that the extra somewhat warmer
days or weeks at high latitudes might allow vagrants a better chance of
surviving and being strong enough to migrate south on our side of the ocean
after going astray. That makes sense to me.
Nick - correct me if I got it wrong.
