As I mentioned before, Varied Thrush numbers here have been very low but
we've had a single female hang around our feeders
all winter. A few weeks ago during the cold/snowy weather we had a large
pulse of them come through with many in the yard and around the feeder.
But they moved on a couple of days later, leaving the single wintering
bird. This bird (as has always been the case here) loves
bird seed and suet, which it will eat while standing on the hanging cage
feeder, as well as morsels on the ground below. A lot of the
time it just forages in the area of the feeder with the many juncos feeding
on I don't know what, as it seems with that many birds

Usually when the V.Thrushes are about it is briefly and early.
Additionally interesting is its effort to get at the suet feeders. They
are caged (starlings) but she has been gleaning dropped pieces from above.
She has twice actively chased away a Starling from a dropped bit and
claimed it for herself.
In more spring like news, there is a pair of N. Flickers
actively excavating a new nest hole in a nearby Maple tree.
