I am going to echo Tim's words because I inherited this circle from Alan
Contreras and continue to model it based on what Tim does in Coos Bay. The
reality folks is that we have done the Coquille Valley (Bandon to Coquille) CBC
for 19 years. Our average species count is 148. That is no misprint, 148
average over 19 counts.
Tim is exactly right, organization, something left for me by Alan who each year
helps me continue to put our count together and Tim's countdown model.
Due credit? I will give mine to Alan and Tim. When someone starts matching 148
a year over 19 years, I'll add to that list. As far as I know, only Tim's Coos
Bay count can top that.

Oops, sorry to say we appear stuck at 146 this year. Failed my mentors again!

In 2015 the Coos count hit 163, tied for our 2nd highest ever, and it was cool
that Yaquina bested 150. I think having a good CBC count comes down to
organization. However, there are many compilers who really aren't focused on
getting high species numbers and just want to have a good time and aren't
concerned about numbers. Personally I like having a well organized count (that
means having owlers out and about and a well planned post count dinner/
countdown). To each his/her own.
And I know Dawn- great to hear she is doing a great job on the CBC up your way

In a recent post David Irons gave accolades to such as Jeff Gilligan and Tim
Rodenkirk for bringing passion and a resultant higher species count at the
Sauvie Island and Coos Bay CBC's respectively. Someone needs to add Dawn
Harris to the list for her work with the Yaquina Bay CBC. Before she became
the compiler of that count 120 species would have been considered a good count.
Now it would be considered poor In 2015 that count topped the state with 152
species. This year, with less than ideal pre-count weather, it the total came
to 138. A lot of this success goes to Dawn's organization. And I speak from
experience. Back in the 1990.s I organized and compiled a CBC for Waldport, I
once served as compiler for the Yaquina Bay CBC, and three years as compiler
for Gilliam County. It takes a lot of work and enthusiasm. Dawn seems to have
both. So hats off to her.
