This afternoon I found a large gathering of blackbirds on Grand Island in
Yamhill county. My first impression was that it was a mixed flock composed
of all-male Brewer's Blackbirds and all-female Red-winged Blackbirds. It is
known that Redwings do associate in single-sex flocks and that blackbirds
are promiscuous, but hey.
Then the flock split and went separate ways. Then I found ~170 male Brewers
and 30 female Brewers in one group. The other flock was 200 female
Redwings, with no males.
No cowbirds. 3 Starlings.
