On the south coast the Band-taileds are thick until late November when they
essentially disappear. On our CBCs in December they are very rare, usually
just a bird or two at a feeder but only every few years. In mid-February,
they migrate back in from wherever they go and quickly become common
again. For those who do not watch closely, they would think they are here
year-round, but they are decidedly absent from about mid-Nov until now.
One of our early pseudo spring migrants for sure.
Merry migration!

Hi,
Sorry, another perhaps basic birding question here. Are band-tailed
pigeons common around Portland in winter? Our sources claim that their
winter range is much further south... I ask because we have a picture of
one from Koll Center Wetlands in Beaverton, taken yesterday.
Thanks,
Glenn
