We started having a pair around 2010 and are now up to at least 2 dozen
around my place in the summer and a couple pairs throughout the winter.
They have managed to keep out the eurasian collared doves

They are hunted in almost every state in the Union. In fact they are
not hunted in a couple of states if my memory serves me right (and Oregon(who
may be one of them, but I might be wrong about that).
Much to my astonishment, when I was a grad student at Univ of Wisconsin
Madison, I once picked up a large coffee table book on Mourning Doves
knew that that much information was available on Mourning Doves). Iflipped
the book open and there in front of me was a graph of how many Doves wereline
harvest every year in the US. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe
the peak harvest was 40 million. For some reason that number seems
ridiculously huge, so I might be way off by a magnitude, but the bottom
is that this is one of the most hunted species in the US.
