A flock of greater white-fronted geese has been wintering this season at the
Bayview pastures on north side of Alsea Bay. My highest count has been 38 of
which about half are juveniles. Today there were 19 white-fronts at Eckman
Slough on the south side of Alsea Bay and then I went over to Bayview and I
counted 33 there so it appears a few more have arrived in the area. The
gorgeous weather apparently stimulated the hooded mergansers (4 males and 4
females) at the Port of Alsea as the males were do some elaborate courtship
displays. I took way too many photographs but what I couldn’t capture was the
guttural calls the males made when their heads were tossed back. It was really
fun. T-shirt weather on the beach today while the eastern 2/3 of the country
is shivering cold.
