I recently learned that we are in the minority within our neighborhood - we sleep with our bedroom windows open regardless the season. For the past 2 weeks we've enjoyed listening to the bouncing-ball call of two WESTERN SCREECH OWL, hereafter referred to as WESO, serenading between the hours of 10:30-Midnight, and then again 3:30-4:45 am. Last night at around 11:00 PM - I jumped out of bed and ran in slippers and shorts with flashlight in-hand to look for the owl in my neighbors backyard! To my surprise - my neighbors were surprised to find me in an excited state standing in their backyard in the middle of the night asking them "do you hear what hear". Their initial reaction to finding me half-dressed in their backyard at that hour lead me to say to myself "I thought we were closer than that!" Nevertheless - those neighbors had the presence of mind to stop, listen, and then gracious point out that the owls were actually calling from a tree located in a nearby yard! -- Jack Williamson West Linn, Oregon
