In case anyone is still interested, the SAY'S PHOEBE on McFarland Rd. south
of Finley NWR, first found by Will Wright on 3/12, is still hanging around.
Oscar and I had to wait for more than half an hour, but eventually (around
4:30 pm) the bird put in a brief appearance on the fence at the 90 degree
bend in the road, then flew to the tree line to the south and perched in
the tallest tree before disappearing again. It also vocalized several times.
Obviously, some patience may be required if you plan on chasing this bird.
On our way back north, we briefly stopped at the Homer Campbell Boardwalk
at Finley NWR and were surprised to hear a Western Screech-Owl calling in
broad daylight near the nest box (about 5:30 pm).
It sure felt like spring out there today!
