Hi all, Below are the tallies from this morning's run of the Umpqua Breeding Bird Survey route, which traverses some of the best/most extensive remaining grassland bird habitat in western Oregon. A highlight was finding GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS at 3 locations, with a total of five singing males. Finding a pair of ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS near a possible nest site was also fun, as were the abundant WESTERN MEADOWLARKS and WESTERN KINGBIRDS. A lowlight was finding only two VESPER SPARROWS -- my lowest count in three years of running this count. The biggest surprise of the route was, at the very last stop in Driver Valley, to hear HERMIT THRUSH singing from up a slope in a fairly mature Douglas-fir plantation. This was just a couple of miles from where I heard two of the Grasshopper Sparrows and one of the Vesper Sparrows. I'm guessing that not many BBS routes in Oregon have recorded Red-shouldered Hawk, Hermit Thrush, and Grasshopper Sparrow all on the same five-stop data sheet.
