Yesterday, March 13, the gates to the basin are open now for (snow free) access to the lake (elevation 3800'). Fishermen, mountain bikers, canoers, kayakers, joggers, picture takers and birdwatchers are around. About 30 Ring-necked Ducks are drifting around the lake calling a quiet style whistle. Mallards, Varied Thrush, Song Sparrow, Gray Jays, Mountain Chickadees are heard, but not in great numbers. A new Beaver Lodge has been built just across the lake from the day-use boat launch area. Went over to the picnic area at Frog Lake, and heard a Pika (eepp! eepp! eepp! eepp!) in the rocky slope across the lake. Very very quiet for birds there. Clear Lake was next. Fishermen in boats are there, and it is so still, you can nearly hear their conversations across the lake. A Bald Eagle was calling from the far side. Bufflehead Ducks were around in moderate numbers. It was so quiet, I could hear their rasping, scrape type calls, and splashing, "beating the water" sounds. Barbara Fox, Welches, OR
