While searching unsuccessfully for the Cattle Egret this morning, I found a
PALM WARBLER and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. They were each 0.5 mile west on
Nielsen Rd. from 101. The Clay-colored was with a monstrously large sparrow
flock (mostly White-crowns) at the large round concrete tank and weedy
embankment next to the pile of white-plastic-wrapped hay bales. The Palm
Warbler was in the pole barn between here and the house (which has a couple of
dogs, so walk gingerly along the road). There were also two SCRUB JAYS and a
BLACK PHOEBE here. It's possible the the Clay-colored may be the same bird
that David Mandell reported yesterday, but his posts always appear as
completely garbled messages in my inbox, so I don't know.

The Great Egrets were starting to build up in a fenced-off field in the NW area
of the airport, but I could not find the Cattle Egret among them. Numbers were
up to 34 when I last checked at 10 am. We may check again around noon on our
way out of town.

Yesterday, a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was on Netarts Bay.

In the "one-that-got-away" category, Susan and I had a flyby gull from Cape
Lookout yesterday that looked like a 1st-winter Laughing Gull. Surely it must
not have been, but who knows? A 4-second somewhat distant view. Folks checking
gull flocks on coastal beaches in the area may wish to keep this in mind,
however.

Thanks to Paul Sullivan for helping to put us on the Dickcissel on Thanksgving
Day -- every bit as delicious a bird as the one we had for dinner later that
day!
