This morning, Ross Barnes-Rickett, my brother Eric and I had 5 male Black
Scoters, along with the more numerous White-winged and Surf Scoters at
Seaside Cove. They were fairly close to shore and provided good views. At
least 3 Clark's Grebes were among the 150+ Aechmophorus grebes. On the
rocks, there were at least 8 Surfbirds, 8 Black Turnstones and 20
Heermann's Gulls. We saw no sign of the Clay-colored Sparrow reported at
the house with the many bird houses earlier this week.
At the Fort Stevens South Jetty, parking lot C, we had 10-15 Lapland
Longspurs flying around and landing briefly in the grass and small pools of
water to the right of the path leading to the beach. A Pacific Loon and 2
Red-throated Loons were visible from the beach. We visited parking lot D an
hour before high tide, and saw no godwits or Willet, the only shorebirds
being a Baird's Sandpiper and a small flock of Sanderlings.
