Steven Rogers and I birded Sauvie’s Island today for several hours, all in the
Rentnaar Road area.
The surprise was a Swainson's Hawk (at some height) flying leisurely from north
to south. It is one of the very few that I have seen in western Oregon, and my
first for Columbia County.
Other birds (some of these had first been seen by Tom McNamara).
3 Bald Eagles
The usual collection of Ospreys, with now large juveniles in the nests
15 Great Egrets
620 to 650 American White Pelicans
1 Long-billed Dowitcher
5 Greater Yellowlegs
1 Lesser Yellowlegs
2 adult Spotted Sandpipers with 2 very small chicks
Plenty of Purple Martins around. (BTW: I saw two in my NE Portland
neighborhood yesterday, only my second sighting in the Laurelhurst neighborhood
in the 39 years that I have lived there)
