*Hello all birders:*

This is our 11/12/15 Scout Summary for the SAS Ankeny Wildlife Refuge
Birding Field Trip to be held on *Saturday, November 21, 2015.*

Tim Johnson, Fred Stephens, Kay Fagan and myself started at the Overlook.
It was coolish with temperature in the 30's to start, warming to the 40's,
but continuing to feel chilly because of the wind chill. Rain is in the
forecast.

*Highlights included the following:*

* We had Peregrine Falcon, Red-tail Hawk, American Kestrel and missed
Merlin, and Bald Eagle and Accipiter except for one of latter species.
The contrasting sightings of one dark and one light morph Red-tail in the
same scout day was interesting.

* * * We scoped for all the shorebirds at the railroad track site where
the Ruff had been previously sighted and failed to re-find. But we had
great looks at Wilson's Snipe and Long-billed Dowitcher. Later at Eagle we
could hear the calls of Dunlin and Dowitchers nicely. One to two
Green-winged Teal were flying with the aerial collective and impressive
flights of the Dunlin to elude predators. This was interesting and almost
humorous.

** * At Eagle Marsh, we had a group of 84 light breasted Canada Geese
that had other Cackling and Canada (western) around, but on this subspecies
group their necks were very slender(skinny) and they did not project the
usually "honk"; more a squeaky calling.

** *We had Western Meadowlark at two spots-the pull out at the RR
tracks and the Willow Tree on Wintel Rd where they are dependably found and
seen.

* We had two White-throated Sparrows at the Buena Vista Ferry stop.
Both visibly different with one being more striking in the chin/throat
feature and distinct scalloping on the back. The other softer tan rather
than white/white at the throat.

*Please join us for our next adventure. Field Trips: *Saturday,
November 21 at 8:00 am at the Ankeny WLR Overlook; Monday, November 16, for
a SAS Short at Minto-Brown parking Lot #3 at 8:00am; and Thursday, November
19, at 7:30 am for a Field Trip to the Coast with Wes Craven, meeting at
Jack-in-the Box parking on Mission and 25th at 7:30 am.
