*SAS ANKENY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE FIELD TRIP*
*SUMMARY:*
20 birders joined to begin the SAS field trip from Pintail Marsh. Skies
were clear, free of any valley fog but starting temps in many of our home
locations was 28 degrees. The group stayed together beautifully for our
observations at 8 stops. This started with 7 vehicles carpooling and
everyone’s helpfulness with this many birders to see and assure all of
seeing the birds, especially, for those new to SAS deserve complement.
We had two nice social contacts on our 10 + miles around; Crystal Springs
representative acknowledged our SAS Birding and related putting out suet
for the Red-breasted Sapsucker( which we did not see) along the fence of
their property. Second the neighbor at Wintel inquired about our Birding
adventure in a positive way.
*TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:*
It was great to see the TUNDRA SWAN. All were looked at carefully.
The SONG SPARROW eating on the apple may seem unusual. In the past,
White-crowned Sparrows have been seen carrying apple pieces at the Refuge..
The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen with GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, and
other perching birds at Crystal Spring corner in shrubby brush just up from
corner of green grass.
The feeding Flock of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS were initially found as 1 bird
then we observed more from up the road point.They perched at the crown of
the oaks overlooking the Crystal Springs fenced field and to see them best
was by walking up the hill and looking back. Caution about traffic. There
is a SAS signage at this point.
We had sizable flocks of CACKLING moving in the sky, and the flock
landing at the Willow pullout had the Snow Goose. Tim Johnson added a photo.
It was interesting to see the AMERICAN COOT eating on a fish.
2 sites had RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. The regular raptor photographers at
Pintail Marsh Parking lot reported today they have been watching 3 younger
birds and 2 adults since fall through our winter season. They are a good
resource of sightings.
Woodpeckers included NORTHERN FLICKER, DOWNY and ACORN WOODPECKER.
The WESTERN SANDPIPER was unexpected and close enough at the Willow
stop to study.
Many found the TOWNSEND’S WARBLER and its striking plumage, the
favorite of the day.
