A group of us did a "birding weekend" trip to Wallowa County and Rhinehart
Canyon, Sun - Wed.

 

Highlights:

Evenings of 22-25 June:

Acting on a tip from a local birder, we went out Golf Course Rd NW of
Enterprise at sunset.  At 3.25 miles we found ~6 SHORT-EARED OWLS milling
about, apparently a family group.  In addition we twice saw a group of
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS flying NW overhead, apparently going to roost somewhere.
Where?

 

23 June, Enterprise fish hatchery, Joseph sewage lagoons, Zumwalt Rd.,
Buckhorn Spring Lookout.

Swainson's Hawk -  scattered sightings

American Avocet - 16 at Joseph sewage ponds

Wilson's Phalarope - 2 at Joseph sewage ponds

Vesper Sparrow - Zumwalt Rd

BREWER'S SPARROW - Zumwalt Rd, N of Pine Cr Rd.

Lewis' Woodpecker - Buckhorn Springs lookout

Western Bluebird - Buckhorn Springs lookout

Red Crossbills - Buckhorn Springs lookout

 

24 June, Wallowa Lake, Kinney Lake, Little Sheep Creek, Devil's Gulch,
Imnaha

American Avocet - at foot of Wallowa Lake, swimming beach

Western Grebe - middle of Wallowa Lake

Bald Eagle - nest with 2 eaglets, Wallowa Lake, Kinney Lake

Dipper - nest under bridge, Wallowa Lake St. Pk.

Chestnut-backed Chickadee - Wallowa Lake St. Pk.

Eastern Kingbird - Kinney Lake, Little Sheep Creek

Vesper Sparrow - Kinney Lake

Golden Eagle - Little Sheep Creek, Devil's Gulch

VEERY - Little Sheep Creek

GRAY CATBIRD - Little Sheep Creek 

YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT - Little Sheep Creek, Devil's Gulch

CHUKAR - Devil's Gulch

RED-EYED VIREO - Devil's Gulch

Canyon Wren -- Devil's Gulch

Poison Ivy - Devil's Gulch

Rattlesnake - Devil's Gulch

 

25 June, below Wallowa, Rhinehart Canyon

BOBOLINKS displaying - Lower Diamond Lane

Osprey - Lower Diamond Lane

VEERY - rest area near Minam, Rhinehart Canyon

GRAY CATBIRD - rest area near Minam, Rhinehart Canyon

Rock Wren -- Rhinehart Canyon

Bullock's Oriole -- Rhinehart Canyon

 

In all we saw 105 species.
