For several years, I've set my OBOL subscription to Vacation Mode, so I
wouldn't receive any posted messages by E-Mail and then went to the ABA site to
read them. However, when I recently posted a photo attachment, although it came
through fine on the OBOL Archive, with a clickable photo attachment, all that
was carried on the ABA site was a long string of data.
So I am now going directly to the OBOL Archive, using a quick-link on my
toolbar and reading the messages there. On the Archive, I click the current
month, then click on the Reverse Order Mode, to bring the latest ones to the
top. It carries the photo attachments and text properly and is no more bother
than going to ABA. Unless ABA changes the way it posts the messages with
attachments, I see no reason to use it for reading OBOL.
Here's another photo, of a male Varied Thrush, of which I've had about 8 in my
yard this Winter, getting black sunflowers seeds from my feeder and digging in
the fir needles for various wiggly organisms, as they always did before they
learned the joys of bird feeders. Interestingly, they cram down large numbers
of the sunflower seeds whole, while the Scrub Jays meticulously shell out each
one. The thrushes come out ahead on this, being able to consume many more in a
given time period. It reminds me of the difference in how a hawk or falcon
consumes a mouse, by picking little bits off it over several minutes of time,
while an owl gives one good gulp and the whole mouse is down, to be internally
separated into regurgitated pellets and what will digest. Several years ago, a
mob of 6 Lazuli Buntings and 6 Black-headed Grosbeaks lived full-time on the
feeder for a month, consuming huge amounts of sunflower seeds whole.
We'll see how this message w/photo works out on the OBOL Archive, as opposed to
the ABA site. Here's the link to the OBOL Archive, if you don't know it:
//www.freelists.org/archive/obol/01-2016 If the photo atachment doesn't
work right on the OBOL Digest or separately sent E-Mails, someone please let me
know. Perhaps someone can give me a tip on how to post a photo attachment so it
auto-opens.
