This is a pretty typical young of the year Northern Shrike. Note the eye
ring. There was a time when most , almost all Northerns I saw in nw Oregon were
brown, but that's strictly anecdotal. Also, to invoke Paulsen's Law, at least
90% of shrikes west of the Cascades from October to March are Northerns. In my
own experience the species first shows up in the middle third of October.
Always a good find. The species is often missed on CBCs in western Oregon. The
Eugene CBC, with lots of prime habitat and 125 observers in the field often
records a single Northern Shrike. Lars
