I agree with Russ, there seem to be unusual numbers of Pine Grosbeaks this year. I've done a lot of cross country skiing in the Cascades and have seen Pine Grosbeaks only twice. Both were in December, 2006. One sighting was a single bird at about 5000' at Mt. Hood, Hood River County. The other sighting was of three birds in the Jefferson Co.Cascades near Three Creeks Sno-Park. Interestingly, that same winter was a mini-invasion like this year's. I recall hearing of sightings from Pittock Mansion, Mt. Tabor, and Larch Mountain in Multnomah County that year. There was also a flock seen in Clatsop County that winter, per eBird. While I think that Pine Grosbeaks are generally scarce in the Oregon Cascades, they certainly are rather common in the Wallowas, at least in the access points around Joseph. We very reliably find them while cross country skiing out of McCully Creek and Salt Creek Summit. I don't think this year's sightings from McCully Creek are anything unusual. Happy birding, Adrian
