I think that this is definitely an irruption year, at least locally in Oregon.
I would also say that I feel that Pine Grosbeaks are uncommon in the state and
rare in Cascades.  I'm sure there are other spots, but the most reliable places
for me have been Anthony Lakes and McCully Creek.

As far as the irruption goes, there were a number of birds in odd places. These
are only from OBOL.  I'm sure there are more records in eBird, especially in
the queue of sightings to be reviewed.

NOVEMBER
Harney County -Tim Blount found one in downtown Burns
Deschutes County - Will Hemstrom had a heard-only bird in La Pine
Benton County - Doug Robinson had the cooperative birds on Marys Peak
Umatilla County - Bill Bradford had a bird in McNary (unusual down on the river)

DECEMBER
Josephine County - Russ Namitz found 6 on Grayback Mountain (1st county record)
Jackson County - Russ Namitz found 1 south of Crater Lake NP just inside county
line
Benton County - continuing birds on Marys Peak

JANUARY
Wallowa County - Khanh Tran found birds at McCully Creek (pretty reliable site)
Jackson County - Norm Barrett found small flock on Mt Ashland
Lane County - Linda Gilbert found a bird above McKenzie Ranger Station (Foley
Ridge)

FEBRUARY
Douglas County - Matt Hunter found a couple birds above Diamond Lake
Deschutes County - Jake Schas found the large flock along the PCT on Santiam
Pass
Klamath County - Julie Van Moorhem found small flock south of Lake of the Woods
Benton County - Bill Proebsting found a flock of six in Corvallis
Jefferson County - Chuck Gates found small flock east of PCT (presumably same
loose group)

MARCH
Deschutes County - continuing birds on Santiam Pass, Russ Namitz found 1 bird
at Mt Bachleor
Lane County - Tom Mickel heard a bird at Gold Lake (near Waldo Lake)

As to the cause of these wanderings, I'm sure there is more than one answer.
The lack of food and/or availability of food certainly come to mind.  Also,
there was a coastal sighting in Neah Bay, WA back when the Northern Hobby was
sighted.  I would say that sighting was unusual for Washington.  I know there
are birds outside of Reno, NV right now, but other than that I haven't
monitored other state listservs.

Good birding,
Russ Namitz
