Bob Altman reports that he found a color-banded Vesper Sparrow singing on
territory on a Xmas tree farm south of Philomath today (March 30).
From the band combination this is a male that was banded last April 27th, as an
after-hatch-year bird (so this year it must be in its 3rd year, at least). Last
seen on May 13, 2018, in the same area where it was banded. The location of
today's sighting was within a hundred yards or so of where we observed this
bird last year.
This fits the pattern noted from past years, that older males seem to show up
first, and right on territory.
Now is a good time to start watching for Vesper Sparrows at other places with
suitable habitat (Bald Hill Farm near Corvallis, Belts Rd. near Brownsville,
etc.). Please keep an eye out for color-banded birds and report them if you see
them!
