Hi all,
Due to generally nasty driving conditions (already over a foot of snow at
residential elevations around Oakridge, and up to 8 inches more expected
tonight, not to mention dropping temperatures overnight which will freeze wet
pavement into glare ice and slush ridges into ridges of ice), plus a forecast
of equally rotten birding conditions on the originally planned count day (snow
mixed with rain all day, then freezing rain just as it's time to drive home),
the Oakridge CBC will be postponed to next Monday, January 3rd.
One or two of our volunteers may need to drop out due to the change of dates,
so we might have room for a few more volunteers, especially volunteers willing
to hike, ski, or snowshoe in snow (since we don't expect for all of the white
stuff to disappear by then). Please contact me if interested.
Also, banking on the idea that next week's weather will be a little better so
we can get over the mountain passes, I'm planning to go ahead with the Antone
CBC in Wheeler/Grant County on Wednesday, January 5th. Not sure yet if we can
get access to the Antone Ranch (which sold to new owners last year) but we can
still cover the Sheep Rock Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument along
the South Fork John Day River, which is usually where we find most of our
birds, plus the public road corridors.
Happy winter birding,
Joel
