Hello all,
Yesterday, Saturday May 14, 2016, Tyler Hallman, Peter Kappes, and I spent
the day birding in Lincoln and Benton counties for the OSU Bird Nerds
Birdathon. We found a total of 135 species! In all, Bird Nerds raised over
$500 during this Birdathon thanks to the support of our sponsors. 25% of
all funds will be donated to the Cascades Raptor Center in Eugene.
Our team focused the majority of our efforts in Lincoln county to see how
many species we could find there in one day. We found 119 species in
Lincoln county before heading back to Benton county at 5:00 p.m. We rounded
out our day by adding an additional 16 species at the Philomath Sewage
Ponds and Finley NWR before nightfall.
The best birds of the day were:
4 WESTERN KINGBIRD perched at the top of a tree off S Beaver Creek Rd.

5 MARBLED GODWIT on the beach at Yaquina Bay State Park
1 RHINOCEROS AUKLET in the waters off Yaquina Head
Other highlights included:
RED-THROATED LOON and a few CLARK'S GREBE at Yaquina Head, multiple
WHIMBREL at many locations along the coast, 127 BONAPARTE'S GULL at Yaquina
Bay State Park, 2 GRAY JAY and 1 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in the Siuslaw
National Forest NE of Waldport
