I often don't want to spend unproductive birding time looking for a single bird
and not finding it, but I felt drawn to the Eugene Mockingbird today, so I went
for it.
I arrived at 2:48 p.m. and spent about one hour and 51 minutes looking for it.
I found it in the alleyway parallel to and between 34th and 35th, about halfway
between Ferry and High Streets. It was in the backyard of a home that has
numerous skylights and solar panels. The home sits on the north side of the
alley. I found the mockingbird the second time I visited that part of the
area.
The neighborhood has a lot of foliage, some of it quite dense, and was very
birdy. I enjoyed moseying through the little-traveled streets and alleyways,
and found 24 species of birds, but I can't help but wonder what interesting and
unexpected things I might have found if I had gone to an unexplored location.
Really, there MUSt be a Harris's Sparrow SOMEWHERE in the area, in a spot where
no one has birded.
