I believe the species occurs naturally in as few as five states, and I'm
pretty sure most ABA listers don't have it on their life list. But it is
remarkably adaptable. I've awoken to its "quark' in Anza Borrego Desert,
east San Diego County, where annual precipitation is 6.5 inches. I most
often see them where rainfall may exceed 100 inches and winter snowpack is
routine. The Valley Quail is a hopeless specialist by comparison.
