Dear OBOL,
Presumably the same NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH reported yesterday by Kevin Spencer
and Dave Haupt was on the mud to the north of the bridge on the walk to Benson
Pond migrant trap at Malheur NWR this morning around 11:15. A VIRGINIA RAIL was
wandering around at the same location at the same time.
When we pulled out back onto the CPR to begin heading south, we had quite a
flurry of activity: A Cooper's Hawk flushed from the willows and zipped in
front of our van; as we looked at the hawk, a coyote walked into the road about
20 yards in front of us. As we looked at the coyote through our binoculars, we
noticed a family of elk in the road about 100 yards ahead, and then Cooper's
Hawk reappeared, flying away from us just above the road between the coyote and
the elk. As the hawk then vanished, a Long-tailed Weasel ran across the road
between us and the coyote. What a binocular full!
Good Birding,
Rich
